Start Early, Pack Room by Room
Most people underestimate how long packing takes. Start at least two weeks before moving day and work room by room. Finish one space completely before moving on. Label every box on two sides with the room it belongs to and a short list of what is inside.
Use Small Boxes for Heavy Items
Books, dishes, and canned goods belong in small boxes. Large boxes filled with heavy items are hard to carry and more likely to break, especially on Boston's narrow staircases in older buildings in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, and the North End.
Protect Dishes and Glassware the Right Way
Wrap each plate individually in packing paper and stack them vertically in the box, like records. Vertical stacks distribute weight better and reduce breakage. Never stack plates flat without padding between them.
Take Photos of Electronics Before Unplugging
Snap a quick photo of the back of your TV, router, and computer setup before disconnecting cables. You will thank yourself when you are setting everything back up and cannot remember which cord goes where.
Keep a "First Night" Box
Pack one clearly labeled box with the essentials: toilet paper, phone chargers, basic toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, medications, and bed linens. Load it last so it comes off the truck first.
Do Not Empty Your Dresser Drawers
For sturdy dressers, leave lightweight clothing in the drawers. Wrap the dresser in stretch wrap so drawers stay shut. This saves boxes and packing time. Remove anything fragile or heavy first.
Use What You Already Own as Padding
Towels, blankets, socks, and t-shirts make excellent padding for fragile items. This cuts down on bubble wrap and saves space since you are packing those items anyway.
Disassemble Furniture Ahead of Time
Take apart bed frames, tables, and shelving the night before. Put all screws and bolts in labeled zip-lock bags and tape them to the furniture piece they belong to. Missing hardware is one of the most common moving-day headaches.
Plan for Boston Parking
Many Boston neighborhoods require parking permits for moving trucks. Check with the City of Boston Transportation Department well ahead of time. Streets in South Boston, Charlestown, and Jamaica Plain can be tight, so confirm your truck fits.
